History of Photojournalism

Professor: John Nordell

Photojournalism was once a joint effort of black and white photography when it came to pictures and images. "Of course for many decades black and white photography was capturing what was a fixed reality based on machine technology, this was done as opposed to painting." Take from the Boston Globe by; Ty Burr. There was a lot about black and white not only in the way of Photojournalism but also in film as well.

However when the of black and white roll film came about it still capture a gritty realistic look especially when it came to taking photos of wars. Photojournalist like the idea of the why these pictures came out. There was no longer the liquid process of trying to create a image. The only problem during this era of black and white was that the technology from the camera part of it was lacking in how the images were developed. There were dark rooms and chemicals to be used for pictures to come out in time for the published newspapers or article for the following day.

Photography is driven by technology whether the technology is wet from back in the late 1800's or to the digital age of 2019. However the golden age of journalism was probably between 1935-1975, and this when black and white images was at it peak. Black and white was the standard way of putting out images for newspapers and magazines. However television changed things for some photojournalist. This is because you were going from still pictures in time to live action images that was new and exciting to some.

This was a deterrent for some photojournalist who may have had some doubt the photos as they new it was going out business. But the power of the camera and shooting images with black and white always tells a story to both the truth and the power of the word and the image. Till this day photojournalists very important means for the story get out on print.
