chapter 4

Photojournalism in the age of the internet mastering multimedia. Photojournalism in the age of the internet posted in 2010 by: Colin Mulvany. Looking back at the troubling position newspapers are in one must wonder if all the talk of multimedia story really matters, yes it does. Photojournalist are curious and independent thinkers therefore in 2010 they must realize that this way of digital era is here to stay. The disruption that online journalism has a place in photojournalist who would rather do still photos is a hard pill to swallow for the traditional photojournalist.

Photojournalist have become more multifaceted visual journalist that has a new format when telling their story. However what may happen according to Colin Mulvany the more talented photojournalist will leave the profession and become more freelance in other areas.
If photojournalist tell stories through pictures according to The Art Career Project the the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a nine percent decline in photojournalism jobs between 2014-2024. This is due to decline in media print such as newspapers and magazines.

However as television, website , blogs, and other publications grow there will be a need for more skilled photojournalist. This position will come with a lot more technical skill then needed back in the 1980's and 1990's .Photojournalist must continue how to capture the moment as they did with still photography. Although photojournalist tell stories through pictures there are other things that come with the job which may not have been around as much during the pre-digital era. Most photojournalist now process and print negatives or film, prepare audio along with the video segment, travel of course ,shoot location, and much more than before.

In the pre-digital era pictures had a tendency to be more authentic as compared to today's photos. This has changed the face photojournalism. According to Time magazine it had said twenty percent of entries to the World Press Photos are eliminated before their final round due to manipulation violations. When taking black and white during the pre-digital era this did not happen the picture was from they taken it from. This has an effect on photojournalism because its quantity over quality and the technology devices used in taking pictures in contrast to the black and white only.

On the cover of Time magazine to cover hurricane Sandy the iphone was used on the cover. To some it looked more like a painting than a photo. During the last two decades photojournalism has undergone a huge change and from writers Sandra Stefanikova and Filip Lab both from Charles University in Prague, Czech Repulican. Comparing analog era or pre-digital era taking pictures have changed. Its now faster, more efficient, and easier with digital technology. In contrast to pre-digital era dating back to mid 1800's it was down right slow.According to some writers digitization has also weaken the position of professional photojournalist and non-journalist and writing reporters placing photojournalism.
