This was during the Depression-era where she really was noticed for her photo journalistic work . In 1936 while going by a sign that read "PEA PICKERS CAMP" she stopped and saw a woman and her children in desperate and hungry situation. According to the Mona web site,"She said that they had been living on frozen vegetables from surrounding field and birds that the childern killed".Lange took seven exposures of the woman : 32 year old Fe Owen Thompson with various combination of her children. This was the photo that put Lange on the map. This was during the Great Depression. Lange's work was put into the Museum of Modern Art in 1940. However Lange did not see her work as art but she was trying express social change in her images. Lange had a great career before "The Depression" during the 1920's she was a portrait photographer in San Francisco.
When Lange started taking photo outside her studio in the 1930's she was carrying a Graflex camera in hand when took a photo of the White Angel Bread line for the unemployed. Lange took this photo to show the despair around The Depression-era. This was necessary as to give a human face to the situation. She was giving a recommendation by Paul Taylor (who later became her husband) to work for the California's State Emergency Relief Administration. During this time between 1935 to 1939 she traveled between California, the southwest, and the south to take pictures of the migrants farmers that had gone through The Depression and the Dust Bowl as well.

She worked for Life and Fortune magazines, which allowed to travel throughout Asia, Latin America, and Egypt. A female family member's story of job discrimination in 1979, this happens to be my mother She worked for Atena Insurance during the 1970's as a clerk along with other women both black and white. All of them were doing the same job, but come to find out the black women were making less then their counterparts. How the information leak out was payroll checks had to be signed by management before each pay period. One day a black associate had to take the checks for signature and that's when she notice the discrepancy between the pay for the white clerks and the differences between the black clerks. Again they were all doing the same job. So one thing lead to another as far as words went. From there the black clerks filed a discrimination grievance against the company.
It took some time but they did manage to get equal pay, but for most whether white or black man or woman discrimination in the workplace continues even in 2019.

Photographic, Artistic, and Compositional, Principles to use when assessing photographs.
The first image: The woman and her daughters. Photo by: Dorothea Lange, Image source: https://www.biography.com/people/dorothea-lange-9372993. Year created: 1936
Principles used here are the Depth of field. This image is a mother and her two daughters living in conditions that are unsanitary and probably no clean running water. Therefore they all were dirty and wanted to get clean. What feeling did the image create? A mother wandering where will her children next meal come from. Also she just wants to clean up and get away from the despair of being in the Depression. Why did I choose the image? My reason for choosing this image, because I saw a mother wanting better for her daughters .Unfortunately she does not have the means or resources to get the bascis of what she needs from one day to the next.
The second image:" White Bread Line" Photo by: Dorothea Lange, Image source: Https://www.biography.com/people/dorothea-lange-9372993. Principles used in this image was Use of shadows. There is only one man looking at the lens, while the others are looking straight ahead with their backs turned while one lonely man is looking forward, What feeling did the image create? I saw sadness and a very lonely man waiting for bread and water. This image have several men waiting for a meal but only one looking forward. His was the only face you could see in the image.
Why did I choose this image? I think this is real, raw and heart breaking to see someone who looks so depressed during the Depression era. This was my reason for picking this image.
